This being the Wild West and all, Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas have some fun rodeos that happen each year. The biggest one is called Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, and it’s coming up this month in July! If you’ve never attended a rodeo before, or if you just haven’t attended this Rodeo, you should definitely check it out.
Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo began in 1937, founded by a sportsman and philanthropist named Spencer Penrose. It’s Colorado Spring’s second oldest ongoing event, so the history behind this Rodeo is deeply felt within the community. In fact, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association located their National Headquarters and Hall of Fame to Colorado Springs mostly in honor of the legacy this rodeo has had on the Springs.
Every year, champion cowboys and cowgirls from around the country are invited to compete in a range of standard rodeo events, including bareback, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. Only top talent is invited to compete, so you’ll be in for a treat as you watch cowboys and cowgirls wrangle their steeds and tackle their livestock.
The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is a blast for both longtime rodeo lovers, first-timers who might not know the difference between a barrel or a bucket, and everyone in between. The cool thing is that proceeds from the event also benefit service members and their families living in the Pike’s Peak Region, so knowing that you’re helping our military heroes by attending this event is a great satisfaction, too.
Pike’s Peak or Bust Rodeo has a parade that kicks off the whole event on July 10th, and the rodeo itself goes from July 11th-14th, 2018. There are also a variety of other attractions going on during the rodeo—including fun mechanical rides, photo opportunities with livestock, delicious food, and other vendors.
